The transition curve

The transition curve

Transition has its own pace.
You cannot force it. But you can understand where you are.

Every transition has phases:

First, there is resistance. You keep doing what you did, even though it no longer works.
Then comes confusion. You know things have to change, but you don’t know how.
Next comes acceptance. You stop fighting what is.
And finally, integration. You find a new direction that fits.

The most difficult phase is confusion.
Because you can’t go back, but you don’t know where to go yet.

This is the trough of the transition curve.
The moment when you lose sight of the big picture.

And this is exactly when mentoring makes a difference.
Because you shouldn’t go faster in that trough.
You need to understand where you are.

And from that understanding, direction emerges.
